View Full Version : Site Access Problems

Hello, PJ...at least, hello to those who are able to access this site.

Currently, I am the only one logged on and dfbovey has informed me that he's been unable to do so for several hours.

Hope this place comes back online for all of you. Not sure why I am able to access it while others are not.

Weird. I haven't had any problems getting on all day. Uh oh... does this mean I'm the only moderator able to access the site now? So much responsibility!

g0b1in
11-03-2010, 12:19 AM
Bovey mentioned it in a dA journal and then I stopped by to see. He's visited other forums and others are having the same problems.

Just thought it was ironic that I was alone, seeing as how I'm rarely logged on and have been away for months.

Well I am not able to login with firefox and in normal browsing mode. But if I use Opera with private browsing enabled I am able to login.

I'm glad its not just me. Neither firefox or ie or avant can get to PJ. I am on my blackberry right now using opera mini.

I've sent an email to Terry about this. I am unable to access the site from either my home or office computers, but I can log on from time to time using my blackberry.

I think we had this same exact problem once before and it took a day or two for things to act normally.

Hopefully everything is back soon.

I was only able to get on after I enabled Opera Turbo.

If you're using Opera, hit F12 and "enable Opera Turbo" is one of the options.

Right, but I was hoping that somebody involved with site-maintenance might be able to use that info to fix this situation.

Sorry for the issues, folks. We had a server issue and then a DNS issue, but it's supposed to be resolved now. You should be able to access the site normally now (depending on how frequently your DNS updates). We'll be migrating to a new server soon.

I was also unable to access the site since about Monday, I guess? At any rate, it's back now, obviously. I guess this is partly behind some of the lower traffic I'd noticed over the past week or so.

It sounds like it's a firefox issue.

It's a DNS issue. It'll resolve itself, different locations, different providers and a bunch of other possible factors can cause DNS to be updated at differently for different people and or devices.

So should we make a sticky that across the forums that mentions this? Maybe encourage people to tell their friends if they were being denied, it's back? Or should we just let traffic return naturally?

If i use a proxy server i can access the site whenever , otherwise it wont let me sometimes. (mot likely the isp of users are being blocked by someone or some odd server bullshit)

i use this proxy site http://search.mycbc.cn/go2world.php

there's a link to a firefox extension/pug-in (which is easier than going to the site and typing the url adress) in the same page.

Hey ... you don't have to be sorry Terry. It is just one of those things. Did you have to restore it back from the old server. As far as I can tell it looks like we went back to that original weekend ... the one where you ported the whole thing over.

I think I can speak for the whole community when I say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for all of your hard work in gettting PJ back up and running.

11-28-2010, 07:08 PM

Yeah, ended up having to restore from 11/15. I know a lot of folks lost a lot of posts, and I hated that it came to that, but I exhausted all other options.

That's EXACTLY why I copied all the code from my last posts. Makes it a brezze to put the back again, even on dial-up like I'm. Frankly, I'd rather see you just write it off at a certain point and get the forum up sooner, than to waste all that time trying to restore the "iffy" files (but I realize you can't really do that). Anyway, for the time being, I reccommend to y'all to just copy your post-codes, and paste them into a simple text document and save them. Not a complicated extra step, and you'll be able to restore your posts easily. (Knock on wood that it won't be necessarry, however).

penciljack
12-01-2010, 02:21 PM
If you can log on from elswhere, but not at work, I'd suspect a firewall issue. You can always try pinging www.penciljack.com from the command line to see what results you get, or even telnet. Either may give you a clue as to what's going on.

Hey Folks I still seem to be having trouble accessing the site through Firefox. Seems to be working fine with IE or Chrome though. However Firefox is my favourite browser and would much prefer to be able to view the site in that. Any ideas?
I've done all the usual stuff of removing all the content , cookies etc. And occasionally it'll work for about three page loads then keep giving me errors.

Any help whatsoever is greatly appreciated

The only performance issues I know of at the moment involve the server load when the backups occur. It may be that we need additional resources, but let's see if we can correlate that to the existing problems.

Glad to see Penciljack is back up and running! I just tried to login about 5 minutes ago and it popped up with the screen "Thanks for logging in" and then sort of got stuck there. The "click" here button didn't seem to work and I went back go Google after a few minutes and then brought PJ back up from my favorites and I was logged in and everything seemed to be working okay? I'm using Firefox and this is the first time I've logged in since the site went down a day or so ago.

---> Just got this message on all 4 of the last posts I've made here in the last 15 minutes or so:

Sorry about all the problems, folks. The issue does appear to be related to server resources, so I've placed an order for hardware upgrade that should happen very, very soon. My heartfelt thanks to all of you for your patience. I know it's been a rocky few months, but we'll get it on track ASAP.

The initial plan is to upgrade the available hardware as much as possible. If that doesn't do the trick, we may investigate moving to another server. I'm also considering moving to a new forum software. The vBulletin 4.x is actually quite a bit more resource intensive than the 3.x versions.

Sorry again for all the trouble.

is there one called 4th rail? when i went there my google chrome browser warned me that it may contain viruses. what sites are there to visit while pj is down?

There is a site called fourthrail.com. If your software is warning to steer clear you probably should listen. Some sites are created specifically to download malicious software onto your computer. Other sites may have once been legitimate sites, but were lost long ago to barbarians at the gate, whether they be anarchists, criminals or notorious foreign governments.
As for safe sites you can visit during your down-time from PJ, I'd suggest Uggabugga.net (not to be confused with Huggabugga.com, unless you want to make things from colorful yarn), since it's like a laid-back bar where many of the PJ regulars congregate to talk about nastier stuff than the mods would ever let them get away with here, but it does have its draw-back in that it doesn't offer the kinds of human resources you'll find here.
There is also Digital Webbing, which is closest in lay-out to Penciljack, but lacks the same feeling. You'll find several of the people who post here cross-post there, though they might not necessarily use the same handles, or wish to admit they cross-post out of some kind of loyalty concern.

Okay folks - we just upgraded pretty much everything there is to upgrade, including the forum software itself. You may witness some sluggishness over the next few hours as the cache is built up again, but I'm actually seeing incredibly improved performance across the board. I hope you see the same, but let me know if not. I'll try to provide a rundown of the new features available as well.

Thanks again to all of you for your patience and persistence!

Yup much appreciated. I'd like to ask one thing though it seems that the forum is now at a different url 'http://www.penciljack.com/forum/forum.php' instead of where it used to be at 'http://www.penciljack.com/forum/' is this on purpose or just a by-product of the upgrade?
Either way glad to see this place up and running.

I think the issue with not being able to have expiring polls will be resolved with the software upgrade. Can't verify though from my blackberry. But with today being pummel deadline it'll be a cool thing to have fixed!

That's a by-product of the vB4 suite. I may try to move the forum to the root directory to avoid the extra hop eventually; I'll see what other options are available.

One issue with the upgrade is that the images aren't showing fully if they are of a certain size or larger. Example:

penciljack

There should be scrollbars at the bottom of the post, but I've already started looking into it.

dfbovey
01-25-2011, 08:22 PM
Cool!

I noticed those. The thing that is odd is that the image I posted in that thread is much larger than it appears. The forum reduced it and doesn't give the option of clicking to make it larger.

penciljack
01-25-2011, 10:04 PM
There's no plugin in place now to resize any images, so that's odd. I'll have to add it to the list of things to track down.

dfbovey
01-25-2011, 10:06 PM
Maybe it's a setting in the existing forum software now?

Just to show you the difference here's a direct link to the image that's been resized:

yeah, definitly do not like the way you have to scroll to see images now, but if it's a trade-off for the board running smoother, then I'm delighted to deal with it.

Image sizing issues should be resolved now. This method actually works much closer to what I had originally intended. Let me know if you have any issues with it.

Very sorry, folks. I just spoke to the host provider, and it looks like our node was suffering a DOS attack. I hope it wasn't directed at us, but even so it was pretty nasty. At least this one wasn't my fault.

Apologies, again. I know PJ has been having a rough patch lately. Seems like it's hard to keep the lights on. I assure you I'm working hard to set things to right.

I have a possibly related issue: A friend of mine cannot get full access to the site, in that he can SEE the threads, but cannot post replies, and he gets the warning message that he needs to register. He says that he's attempted to register several times, but has never received his confirmation e-mail, and, of course, when he tries to open a new account, he gets something about that name being already taken. His onscreen name is "qrowdad", and he's given me permission to forward his e-mail addresses to you:

kevinparks@sbcglobal.net
kdp@kevinparks.com

Please help him if you can, I'd really like him to be able to comment on my posts, as well as to post himself.

And P.S.:
Thanks for all your hard work in keeping this site going. I've really been helped a lot by all the comments and critiques of my posts; It's really helped me to progress a lot faster than I would've otherwise, and I really feel comfortable at this forum as oppossed to others I've tried. :)

That's really odd. What error are you receiving? I'd be inclined to suspect it might have to with your office firewall or perhaps your bandwidth is being saturated - I'm pretty much able to get the site to come up quick-like at all hours now even on a low rate connection.

Time was, AOL declared everything sent from PJ as spam and blocked us. We ended up getting that resolved, as best I can remember (been quite a while). Right now the email issues seem to be localized to the PJ server being unable to send.

You've been so helpful, I didn't want to ignore your efforts…but as of my last communication with my friend, he was still not getting results. He's kinda busy, spends most of his forum time on DeviantArt, and gave me the impression that he wasn't interested in persuing this right now. Thus, I haven't asked him about specific errors or urls. I know he can view forums, as he critiqued one of my posts while we were at Starbuck's, while we looked at it on his iPhone. He just can't post or reply. Last thing was that I notified him that you'd activated his account (this was via a comment on one of his deviations). So for now, I'm leaving it up to him to pursue or not.

But always: thanks for all the effort! :)

wow gold is the standard form of currency in World of Warcraft. It can be accumulated in-game by dedicated players, or purchased outside the game system through merchants. Wow player characters can acquire various items in the game, either by game events or by purchasing wow gold. Items can vary from resources such as herbs or raw ores to items to be retrieved for quests. Player characters can also equip different weapons and armor, either to customize their character or improve abilities such as better attacks or defense skills.
There is only one way to get wow gold (http://www.storeingame.com) in game, which is to keep killing monsters again and again. Obviously it is not easy and very boring, so searching a good website and buy cheap wow gold (http://www.zyy.com)and items on sale is a good choice.

Now, as I begin to report a glitch, NATURALLY it DOESN'T occur here, when I'm reporting it. Never the less: in my first post/reply of the day, I didn't get either font/formatting options, OR the option to pull-down/legnthen the reply window.

However, NOW, as I'm typing this, I DO get those features, so I don;t know what to think (is it because I'm on dial-up?). So: just reporting it incase anybody else encounters it. :)

Is there some reason that I am not permitted to post images all of a sudden? Or: am I missing something? I opened up a "post new thread" in "Sketches", and could find no tools to post image links. Down below on every page in the forum, it says that I do NOT have permission to post attachments. (When I reveiwed the instructions for posting, I see that that applies to everyone, and means that the image has to be hosted off-site). But still, I cannot find the usual tools for including image-links. Not to sound panicky, but did I violate a rule that I wasn't aware of? Or is the forum having problems? Please let me know soonest, I'd appreciate it.

Okay, update: As I post THIS, I can see the tools fine. When I pre-viewed my "Bat-Cleavge" (http://www.penciljack.com/forum/showthread.php?113377-Bat-Cleavage-%28sfw%29&p=1268910#post1268910) post (having gone to the IMG code list to manually insert images), the tools are there then. So, I'm not sure what's happening, but as long as I can post images, I'm happy. It's possible my browser's now too far out of date, and I can't upgrade, as my even more out-of-date operating system won't support the upgrade. I can't even load the newest version of Flash player for the same reason. Could any of that be part of my problem with this forum?
