I just finished 702, and not surprisingly, I kind of feel that this is a gamble that is not going to pay off. Why is it that Superman is always walking through ghettos?

It just feels like this should be a one or two issue idea, not a larger arc. Though I like the alien element introduced in this issue, I think you could have accomplished that same story without the whole "Supes takes a walk" thing.

I'd be interested to hear what everyone else thinks.

I don't read Superman, so you would have to give me more details on what the whole arc is about.

I read 700. I really just bought it for the Cassaday cover. I didn't realize he was going to keep walking around for several issues though! I thought it was an ok idea for a one shot, but a whole arc? No thanks haha

I read the first two in J Micheal Stracyzinski's new arc on Superman, and decided not to continue reading it. Maybe I'll check it out in the trade (if I have the money), but it just seemed forced. The whole thing seemingly revolves around a woman accusing Supes of not saving her husband when he was off saving the world instead, and he has some sort of "lightbulb" moment where he is now going to walk across the country and help common people as he does. The whole thing seemed forced and just not that interesting, I believe I read (somewhere) that the story arc is supposed to go 12 issues.

Given JMS's inability to finish up a story line (Squadron Supreme, and that other one he started and never finished), I'm not sure that they're going to attract many new readers with this storyline.

I heard about this through G4's coverage of SDCC , of all places! I see it like Superman trying to reconnect to his humanity. Walk the Earth to give himself time to think. Not unlike the character Jules from Pulp Fiction who was referring to the character from Kung Fu.

@ajkarp: Absolutely. And I think it's good to encourage taking chances with these legacy characters, which is why I wanted to give it a few issues before judging it. But so far, a lot of it is just ringing false and it's coming off like a gimmick.

Funny this is, the best DC relaunch in the last decade was Green Lantern, and all Johns did there was keep true to the spirit of the character and expand the universe. No radical story elements, no costume redesigns, just solid story telling and patience.

I'm with scmarooney, time to wait for the trade.

I would have more input on this subject if Superman wasn't crap! :D Sorry I can't help...

I really thought this whole arc wasn't too bad. It's really getting down to Superman questioning his purpose, which you don't see too often. The last issue with flash (barry allen) was done well I thought.

So SCMarooney was a bit prescient on this. But I just heard that one of the rumors coming out of Wonder Con is that JMS is coming back to Superman in the fall.

Seriously.

From what I understand everything going on in the Super titles is supposed to kind of examine who the characters are overall. I also think everything is supposed to tie back together with Action Comics 900 which is due out any day now.
