I don't know the man, but I wonder if he's the sort of artist who shies away from critical examination of the work in favor of production speed and volume.

That is to say, there's some guys, usually self-taught, who aren't interested in critically examining their own work more than is necessary to get the jobs done. Artists like that often have the advantage of being very fast, and by nature they don't put up with a lot of revision feedback and shit, so long as someone out there appreciates the pure energy they put into their work they don't care if they're not following "the rules". In fact, sometimes "not following the rules" is half of the point.

That's not a value judgement, but rather what I would perceive as a more "fine arts" approach to what's normally considered "commercial arts" work. And if he can make it fly then it's a pretty near impossible position to assail.

Thing is, I love Liefeld's work, but sometimes he makes it hard to be proud to be a fan. Deadpool is somehow using sort of telekinetic abilities to lift of Cable. His arms go straight down, but are not under Cable at all. And it couldn't have been that hard to draw arms under him considering that he was basing the drawing off of George Perez.

That's what I'm talking about. I have to think it's because he's got some other aspriation than the usual "be a better illustrator" that drives a lot of us... like, learning how to do it the "right" way isn't what it's about for him.

Which leads me to wonder what it is about, for him... I'd be interested to know who his inspirational artists are. Like, who's work he treats as a guideline for what he aspires towards.
