I saw some new Sherlock Holmes books yesterday and the covers were lovely. In the course of trying to find them on the internet I just started coming across loads of book covers that looked gorgeous -- and I thought I'd post them here....

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is children's fiction?

^ Yes. If someone presented it to me as an adult book I wouldn't bat an eyelid though.

I think it might only be marketed as a children's book in the UK. I read that book years ago and it never crossed my mind while reading it that it was meant for children. It was shelved in the "fiction" section of the bookstore, not the "children's fiction" section, and the cover gives no indication that it might be for children. This is the cover of the American edition:

Y'know, I listened to the audiobook of that last year and never noticed what the cover was supposed to be. I just got it.

I love this cover. The top black section is part of the hardcover itself, then there are 3 dust jackets of varying size stacked on top of each other.

If you flip it over, he's holding a bouquet of flowers. I didn't believe it was a "real" Banksy book until I read the quote on the back.

Heh, I really liked the cover of that book, but couldn't stand the way Bradbury writes.
I also noticed that Chabon's books always have excellent covers. I usually pick books based on the cover (the only time I go to book stores is when my wife is shopping for something else in the mall, so I never go there knowing what to look for) and title, so I've ended up with a lot of his books. Pretty good stuff.

Ugh, I hate movie tie-in book covers. Picked this up today, and granted it's far from the worst I've seen. Still...blegh. :x

I know what you mean. I honestly feel embarrassed reading classic books with the redone movie cover.
Then you guys are gonna hate this:

They seem to sometimes be classed based on the age of the protagonist which is bizarre really. I guess they think that some adults will put a book down in disgust if they find out that they're reading about a pre-teen?
When I worked at a bookstore in Canada it was classed as adult fiction.

Herman Melville is buried very close to me. I used to sneak in the cemetery and visit him and Miles Davis.

It's worth mentioning that the PA weren't so much ripping on it as running with it... as Jerry/Tycho put it:
Maybe it isn't entirely forthright, putting a crusader badass the cover of your medieval allegory - but I don't care. In fact, I support this kind of thing wholeheartedly: fact is, sometimes you got to lie to a mother****er. If showing a dude holding a giant spine with an aftermarket scythe affixed is what it takes to get young men to read a single page of the classics, than so be it. I hope these shenanigans work like gangbusters. We've got your backs on this thing. Looky here, we'll even prime the pump. (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2010/1/15)
He might have a point, at that.
